{"id":1247,"date":"2010-03-17T00:16:03","date_gmt":"2010-03-17T06:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saskabush.com\/content\/?p=1247"},"modified":"2010-03-17T00:17:14","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T06:17:14","slug":"residents-urged-to-prepare-for-buble-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.saskabush.com\/content\/2010\/03\/17\/residents-urged-to-prepare-for-buble-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents Urged To Prepare For Bubl\u00e9 Virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SASKATOON (SBP) \u2013 The Health Region of Saskatoon has sent out a general warning to area residents to be on the alert for a debilitating virus.\u00a0 Known as the \u201cBubl\u00e9 Virus\u201d, it is said to mostly affect hospital staff or those who provide medical support.\u00a0 Local hospitals are expected to be running virtual skeleton crews when the virus fully takes hold on August 14th of this year. <!--more--><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cWe just wanted to remind the citizens of Saskatoon to be extra careful on the evening of August 14 because we are projecting a hightened threat of the Bubl\u00e9 virus.\u201d said Eric Montebank, middle manager of the Health Region, who was on call while the entire executive were on sick leave.\u00a0 The executive are reportedly suffering from the common \u201cWestJet seat sale to Puerto Vallarta\u201d cold.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cIt&#8217;s not often that we can determine a serious flu bug warning, but we are very certain that the air borne Bubl\u00e9 virus will strike the city,\u201d said Montebank, \u201cDon&#8217;t question us how we know.\u00a0 We just know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nViral warnings are commonplace in Saskatoon.\u00a0 Public alerts were issued in November 2006 and again on November 10th, 2009.\u00a0 Both of those dates saw a critical shortage of hospital staff who were inflicted with anything from the \u201cVanier Cup\u201d cold to other \u201cKiss concert\u201d afflictions.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cThose were rather unfortunate times,\u201d said Montebank, \u201cThat Vanier Cup cold was something that caught us off guard.\u00a0 Thankfully, we were better prepared when the Kiss Concert Virus arrived in the city in late 2009.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nKnown as \u201cEvent Strain\u201d viruses, the Vanier Cup, Kiss Concert and\u00a0 Bubl\u00e9 strains seem to target hospital staff.\u00a0 They are also known to greatly affect Crown Corporation employees and any other form of unionized staff.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cWe really can&#8217;t explain it,\u201d said Montebank, \u201cIt just seems to target a certain entitlement-driven and heavily protected demographic.\u00a0 You know, like that 1918 flu which seemed to only go after young people.\u00a0 Yeah, that makes sense now&#8230;doesn&#8217;t it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nWhile the hospitals in Saskatoon are expected to be virtually bereft of staff on August 14th, area residents can expect roughly the same service they had in the past.\u00a0 Wait times in emergency should only increase to a mere 16 hours as opposed to the normal 5 hours.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cThings should be okay,\u201d said Montebank, \u201cI&#8217;m sure our level of care will still be as high as Regina&#8217;s.\u00a0 Where, you know, a 73 year old cancer patient can walk into a hospital under his own steam, go in for a scheduled &#8216;routine&#8217;
