Jack Layton Briefly Resigns Over On Camera Shoving Match

TORONTO (SBP) – After shoving a woman out of the way to mug in front of a TV camera, Jack Layton did the honourable thing and briefly resigned his post as leader of the federal NDP. Layton’s discretion occurred on live TV at a popular Toronto sports bar during the men’s gold medal hockey game.

“I am truly sorry that an ordinary woman got in my way when a camera was present,” said Layton in a post shoving press conference, “She had to realize that the shot was not her photo opportunity; it was the people’s photo opportunity.

“After much thought, I have chosen to do the most patriotic thing in the world and resign my position as NDP leader.” continued Layton, who was a key figure in sabotaging Toronto’s summer Olympic bid in 2001, “Considering that I’ve called for the resignations for other MP’s who’ve so much as chewed gum during question period, I would be the biggest hypocrite in the world if I didn’t call for my own resignation and posthumously step down.”

Layton then handed his resignation to a fellow party member who promptly forgave him and gave him back the leadership of the party.

Layton re-accepted the leadership of the NDP and said, “Thank you for recognizing my courageous act of resignation, my fellow NDP comrades. Thank you for forgiving me and showing the world that our NDP party is the best to push and shove this nation into a new hope of change in the future.

“We are proud, strong and vigilant like that hackey sack team that won the gold medal on Sunday for our great nation,” continued Layton, who paused as a handler whispered something in his ear, “Oh…I mean HOCKEY team. Yes, yes, I was at that drinking establishment to watch hockey. Not hackey sack; Hockey! Go Canada hockey Go!

“I love hockey. It is my favourite national sport. I played wide receiver as a child.”

Layton’s brief resignation gesture comes on the heels of a conservative MP who threw a tantrum at a Prince Edward Island airport. The conservative MP has yet to apologize in the face of calls for her resignation.

“Follow my lead Ms. Guergis,” said Layton as he looked directly into the unimpeded camera, “Shove yourself out of the way or risk being pushed around like an ordinary woman who blocks a camera in a sports bar. It is clearly your choice.”

Layton then thanked the press for their time and made sure every camera had a clear shot of him as he left the room.
